Why don't I see English longbows of osage?

Time tourist: Osage makes fine ELBs. Fine any kind of design, actually. It is harder to find long straight staves of osage, so that might limit the number. Of couse, being stiffer and a bit less...

They are not uncommon, but if they are made to the same dimensions as a yew bow they will give up some performance.If the dimensions are appropriate to the density of the wood they are OK.Rod.

Rod, it is my impression that if you made one the same dimensions as yew, you could have a 200# bow. I thought Jim Hamm made bows like this? Or are his flat limbed?

I make a lot of osage elb's, with bamboo back and a bamboo core. With that combo I get about 1/2" of set, if that. Fast bow... heavy weight, about 1" diameter 67# @ 28". also on my website bowstick.com

As has been observed, with osage it is better to make a more slender bow, particularly wth regard to limb mass in the outer limb and tips.Rod.
